Barbara Gonzales Tahn Moo Whe San Ildefonso Pueblo Avanyu Pottery Jar W/Bird
We are offering a wonderful polished sienna bulbous jar by Barbara Gonzales, Tahn Moo Whe (born 1947), a very talented potter from San Ildefonso Pueblo. Her mother was Anita Martinez, also a potter, as were her grandparents, Adam and Santana Martinez. Her great-grandmother was the legendary Maria Martinez. This exceptional example is carved with an avanyu and stepped geometric design with an applied unglazed bird figure, both with inlaid turquoise eyes. There is a band of tiny cut shell beads encircling the spout. Signed on the bottom "Tahn Moo Whe X_5". Barbara not only took traditions from her family, she personalized her work with "slipped-designed polychrome", as she describes it. This process was achieved by utilizing inlaid turquoise and coral on etched black and sienna wares, most notably her spider designs which she created in 1973. In excellent overall condition. No chips, cracks or repairs. Crisp & clean! Measures 3 5/8" by 3 1/2".
